Ukraine Studies Fellowships
About the Fellowships
The Petrach Program on Ukraine at the George Washington University’s Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (IERES) offers fellowship opportunities in Ukraine Studies that are open to scholars based in Ukraine or who were based there before February 24, 2022.
Applications for the 2026–2027 cycle are now closed.
Non-resident Fellowship
Duration: 12 months
Timeframe: September 2026 – August 2027
Number of fellowships available: 12
Funding: $800/month
Who may apply: Scholars who have already earned their PhD or Candidate of Science degree; are based in Ukraine or were based there up until February 24, 2022; are working on any topic at the intersection of Ukrainian studies and international affairs, broadly defined; are professionally fluent in English; and have not held this fellowship or one of our in-residence fellowships since 2022. The selected Fellows will stay in Ukraine or wherever they are based currently during their fellowship. Scholars who are currently internally displaced will be given priority.
Junior Visiting Fellowship
Duration: 12 months
Timeframe: September 2026 – August 2027
Number of fellowships available: 1
Funding: $60,000
Who may apply: Early-career scholars who have obtained their PhD or Candidate of Science degree within the past 10 years, are based in Ukraine or were based there up until February 24, 2022; are working on any topic at the intersection of Ukrainian studies and international affairs, broadly defined; are professionally fluent in English; and have not previously held a Junior Visiting fellowship. The fellow will come to Washington, D.C., for a whole year in residence at IERES to conduct their research, participate in our activities and events, and may teach a course in Spring 2027.
Senior Visiting Fellowship
Duration: One semester (5 months)
Timeframe: Fall 2026 (August through December) OR Spring 2027 (January through May)
Number of fellowships available: 2 (one per semester)
Funding: $35,000
Who may apply: Senior scholars who are based in Ukraine or were based there up until February 24, 2022; are working on any topic at the intersection of Ukrainian studies and international affairs, broadly defined; are professionally fluent in English; and did not hold this particular fellowship or our Junior Visiting Fellowship previously (since 2022). The fellow will come to Washington, D.C., for one academic semester in residence at IERES to conduct their research, participate in our activities and events, and may teach a course in Spring 2027.
