Ukraine Studies Research Fellowship
About the Fellowship
The Spring 2027 Ukraine Studies Research Fellowship supports scholars affected by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine whose work contributes to Ukrainian studies and international affairs. The selected fellow will join the IERES intellectual community in Washington, D.C., for four months during the Spring 2027 semester.
The fellow will be expected to pursue their proposed research project while in residence at IERES, give a research presentation at IERES, present in the Petrach Program’s Online Conference on April 23, 2027, and participate in relevant university and institute activities. There is no teaching requirement associated with this fellowship.
Fellowship period: January 15–May 15, 2027
Stipend: $5,000 per month ($20,000 total). If needed, the fellowship will also cover reasonable visa-related expenses and one round-trip ticket between the fellow’s base location and Washington, D.C. Fellows are responsible for other expenses, including housing and health insurance, from their fellowship stipend.

Eligibility
Applicants must:
Hold a PhD or Candidate of Science degree at the time of application;
Be currently or previously based in Ukraine;
Work on a topic at the intersection of Ukrainian studies and international affairs, broadly defined; and
Be professionally fluent in English.
Previous holders of IERES fellowships are welcome to apply, though preference may be given to applicants who have not previously held an IERES fellowship or whose fellowship was less recent.
Application Requirements
Applicants should complete the online application form and submit:
An English-language CV;
A cover letter of no more than two pages describing the research project they would pursue during the fellowship and explaining how a period at IERES would benefit their work; and
The names and contact information of two references. Letters of recommendation are not required at the application stage.
