WOCUP 2024:
INFORMAL POLITICS:
Regime Change and Ukrainian Democracy
Held January 26, 2024 • George Washington University
WOCUP 2024 focused on the role of informal politics, patronal networks, and regime transformation in shaping Ukraine’s democratic future, particularly in the context of the ongoing war. The workshop brought together scholars and practitioners to discuss how Ukraine’s political system has evolved, how patronalism constrains democratic development, and how wartime identity and civic mobilization may enable democratic renewal after victory.
How national identity is transforming
Civic engagement, activism, and anti-corruption movements
Public expectations for democratic accountability
The event featured a lecture by the editors and contributors of Ukraine’s Patronal Democracy and the Russian Invasion, providing an in-depth examination of how Russia’s full-scale invasion has transformed Ukraine’s political system. The speakers examined how wartime solidarity and a strengthened national identity are transforming the country’s democratic prospects. The discussion drew on the book’s analysis of Ukraine’s political-economic trajectory, highlighting how patronal networks and post-communist legacies continue to influence governance. Contributors explored whether the war may open opportunities for anti-patronal reforms, stronger institutions, and a more resilient democracy in the years ahead.
